Soraya de Chadarevian is a professor in the Department of History and the Institute for Society and Genetics at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA). She has an advanced degree (Diplom) in Biology and a PhD in Philosophy as well as postdoctoral training in the history of science. Before joining the faculty at UCLA, she was a senior research associate and affiliated lecturer in the Department of History and Philosophy of Science at the University of Cambridge (1991–2006) where she keeps the status of an affiliated scholar. Her main areas of interest are the life sciences in the twentieth and twenty-first century. She is the author and editor of numerous books, including Designs for Life: Molecular Biology after World War II (Cambridge 2002, 2011), Heredity under the Microscope: Chromosomes and the Study of the Human Genome (Chicago 2020) and Models: The Third Dimension of Science (co-edited, Stanford 2004). Currently she is tracing the history of radioactive strontium from nuclear fallout as the first global pollutant.
During her stay at the Institute, she will be collaborating with Lisa Onaga as part of her ongoing affiliation with the Department III working group Proteins and Fibers: Scaffolding History with Molecular Signatures (2018–2025).
She is also collaborating on a contribution to the Commoning Biology Working Group's Special Issue: Research Interviews in the History of Science and Medicine: Reflections and New Directions, to be published in the journal Berichte der Wissenschaftsgeschichte.
