Marie-Madeleine Mervant-Roux is Emeritus Research Director (Theater Studies) at the CNRS (INSHS, National Institute of Human and Social Sciences), attached to the THALIM Research Unit (CNRS/Université Paris 3/ENS). Her research is dedicated to sound and listening in nineteenth-century to twenty-first-century French theater. She leads the ANR ECHO program (2014–2018, THALIM/Bibliothèque nationale de France/LIMSI). ECHO focuses on spoken voices on French stages in the second half of the twentieth century. Mervant-Roux’s current research themes are theater discography (1950−1980), theater and radio in France during “les années noires” (1940−1944), theater acoustics and sound systems, the use of audio archives for theater research, and the silence of theory on the aural dimensions of theater.
