Cathy Gere is Associate Professor of History of Science and Medicine at University of California San Diego. She obtained her PhD in the History and Philosophy of Science at the University of Cambridge in 2001, after which she undertook a postdoctoral project at King’s College Cambridge funded by the Wellcome Trust. She taught at the University of Chicago before arriving at UC San Diego in 2007. Her first book, The Tomb of Agamemnon (Harvard, 2006), has been translated into Greek, Turkish, and Mandarin. Knossos and the Prophets of Modernism (Chicago 2009) won the Bonner Prize as well as a Prose Award from the American Association of Publishers. She recently published a third book Pain, Pleasure, and the Greater Good: From the Panopticon to the Skinner Box and Beyond (Chicago, 2017). She is currently working on a project on “bourgeois psychology,” historicizing the figure of the competitive, entrepreneurial, individualistic subject.
