The topical collection aims at investigating the different roles that approximation methods have played over the history of physics and other mathematically dense sciences. It follows up on two workshops on the same topic that were organized by the Max Planck Research Group on “Historical Epistemology of the Final Theory Program” in the summer of 2021 and then again in the summer of 2022.
