Clare Griffin is a graduate of University College London and Assistant Professor for Russian History at Indiana University Bloomington. She is a specialist in knowledge, translation, and trade in the early modern global world, and the author of Mixing Medicines: The Global Drug Trade and Early Modern Russia (Montreal: McGill Queen’s University Press), which she worked on as a postdoctoral researcher in Department II at the MPIWG in 2015–2017. She has substantial experience in the post-Soviet region, having studied and conducted research in Russia and having spent five years working at Nazarbayev University, Kazakhstan. She is now working on her second book project, “War Wounds: Soldiers’ Bodies between Firearms Technologies and Military Medicine in the Early Modern World.” During her stay at the MPIWG in summer 2023, she will be working with the “Ability and Authority” working group in Department III to discuss premodern craft knowledge through the lens of military action and military medicine.
