Annette Kieser

Annette Kieser studied Chinese Art & Archaeology and Sinology at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, obtaining her PhD in 2002. She is currently leading a DFG-funded project on Six Dynasties (220–589) tombs from the Yangzi middle region at the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster. Her research interests include art and archaeology between the Han and Tang dynasties. She has published several monographs on this period including Grabanlagen der Herrscherhäuser der Südlichen Dynastien in China (420–589): Geisterwege und Gräber im Spiegel der Geschichte (Mainz: Römisch-Germanisches Zentralmuseum, 2004), and co-edited Production, Distribution and Appreciation: New Aspects of East Asian Lacquer Wares, European Studies in Asian Art and Archaeology 1 (Leiden: Brill, 2019). A selection of her articles has recently been published as 从文物考古透视六朝社会 Cong wenwu kaogu toushi Liuchao shehui (Nanjing: Nanjing daxue, 2021).

Kieser is a founding member of the European Association of Asian Art and Archeology, council member of the Society for East Asian Archaeology, and corresponding member of the Deutsches Archäologisches Insitut. At the MPIWG, she is part of the “Transience: Politics and Practices of Time in the Chinese Period of Division” Working Group, exploring transience in death and burial as it is manifested in the manifold material record of Six Dynasties Southern China.
