Joppe van Driel

Visiting Scholar (2015)

Research Scholar, University of Twente, funded by the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO). Joppe van Driel specializes in the history of chemistry and governance in Western-Europe, 1700–1840. He currently focuses on forms of waste and pollution management around 1800. He is finishing his PhD at the University of Twente, participating in the international research programs “Sites of Chemistry, 1760-1840” and “Chemistry in Everyday Life” headed by prof. Lissa Roberts. He has developed and co-designed the family exhibition Wealth of Waste on the history of recycling for Museum Boerhaave in Leiden.

He holds a MSc degree in History and Philosophy of Science (University of Utrecht), and BSc and BA degrees in Physics and Philosophy (University of Amsterdam). In 2011, he won the Dutch Thesis Award (best master thesis in History, International Institute for Social History) for his thesis on Jean de Castillon and 18th-century anti-materialism. He has taught university courses in History, Philosophy of Science, Mathematics, and Experimental Physics.
