The Max Planck Institute for the History of Science (MPIWG) is seeking
to appoint a
full-time (up to TVöD 14)
Digital Humanities Specialist (m/w/d)

The post is tenable from 1st of January 2022 or as soon as possible and for a fixed-term contract for two years.
The newly appointed colleague will work as an embedded Digital Humanities Specialist in the Max Planck Research Group “Practices of Validation in the Biomedical Sciences”. For further information on the research group see here.

 

Your tasks:
You will be expected to collect, explore, and analyze a collection of digital textual, as well as audio and video resources composed of a number of online repositories for oral history, as well as edited interviews by medical researchers and pharmacology specialists.
In close collaboration with members of the research group, you will apply a range of digital methods to systematize and organize the material, and help the research group to analyze how biomedical research communities employed and communicated evaluative categories and methods in the second half of the twentieth century. You will contribute to academic publications and develop digital resources.
The successful candidate is also expected to collaborate with the MPIWG’s IT Research Group, a group of six scholars working on a wide range of Digital Humanities projects at the institute.

 

Your profile:

  • Master’s-level degree, preferably in digital humanities, information science or related fields
  • Experience with scripting and programming languages such as Javascript, Python, Ruby
  • Skills and experience in digital methods for historical research, such as text analysis, data visualization, and working with audio visual archival data
  • Interest in the history of science and computational history
  • Overview of and familiarity with commonly used tools in the digital humanities such as MySQL, Django, or JQuery
  • Capable of working independently as well as working collaboratively in a team
  • Enthusiasm for learning new technologies and developing new skills independently
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, in English

 

Additional qualifications (optional):

  • Advanced level degree (Masters, PhD as well as ABD (all but dissertation)) in computer science or related disciplines
  • Experience working in digital humanities or humanities-tailored digital projects
  • Experience working with oral history and audio material
  • Working knowledge of computer-aided text analysis and natural language processing techniques

 

What we offer:
A versatile workplace with a family-friendly climate and an international academic atmosphere. The salary is based on the German public service salary scale TVöD, up to level E14, depending on your qualification.
