Open Call: Summer Fellowship, "China’s Research Engagement in Europe" (Deadline June 5, 2021)

About the Fellowship

The Lise Meitner Research Group “China in the Global System of Science” at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science, Berlin, together with Horizon 2020’s COST Action “China in Europe Research Network” (CHERN) offers to host one summer fellowship to take place between July–September 2021, in the scope of the CHERN Short-Term Scientific Mission (STSM) program. STSMs aim to strengthen scientific networks and collaborations, increase knowledge exchange through access to specific expertise or methods, and especially support junior researchers in their professional development.

The project focus is a specific theme of “Chinese engagement in European higher education and research.” We therefore welcome researchers with a related social science background (international relations, political science, China studies, higher education studies, and so on) to apply. The visiting scholar will be working collaboratively with the group on mapping Chinese presence in European academia. The project will map possible data sources, identify suitable methods and an analytical framework under which a future study would be developed. The result of this short summer fellowship will be a policy brief and, a proposal for future work, with the end goal of developing a plan for more thorough analysis.

The MPIWG also hosts many other academic activities such as conferences, workshops, brown bag seminars, and colloquia.

Specific information about the call can be found in the CHERN PDF download here.

Anyone who meets the eligibility criteria (outlined in the above PDF) is welcome to apply; junior researchers (PhD or postdoctoral level) are especially welcome.

Fellowship Dates

3-4 weeks (tentative length)—dates and length will be determined with the selected applicant.

What is Funded

The visiting scholar will receive a grant from COST to fund their period of residence, which covers a per diem, accommodation and reimbursement for a return ticket to and from their place of residence. The payment will be a grant that cannot exceed 3500 EUR. The fellowships must take place in residence in Berlin and cannot be postponed or transferred. The successful candidates are expected to take part in the research life of the hosting research group and the Institute, in order to advance their own research projects, and to actively contribute to the project activity during their period of affiliation.

For all inquiries please contact Ms Andrea Braun Střelcová at astrelcova@mpiwg-berlin.mpg.de.

Candidates of all nationalities are encouraged to apply. Pandemic restrictions may mean that initial meetings and activities have to be done remotely. However, we hope that travel restrictions will be lifted and that residence in Berlin during the summer and early autumn 2021 will be possible. Unfortunately, fellowship cannot be completed virtually and residence in Berlin is required to receive the funding.

Candidates apply directly to the COST e-application system, https://e-services.cost.eu/user/registration/email. However they must send an inquiry with a short CV and stated motivation, in order to receive a Letter of Intent from the research group “China in the Global System of Science”. The application needs to be endorsed by the research group in order for the applicant to submit their formal application to COST.

Application Deadline

June 5, 2021.
