The Study of African Studies in China: Some Methodological Challenges

In the context of China’s increasing global influence through initiatives like the Belt and Road, African Studies has recently emerged as an attractive, dynamic, and well-supported field in Chinese academia. Based on preliminary research and personal experiences with the booming discipline of African Studies in China, this talk will analyze some of the methodological challenges that arise in the ethnographic study of a sensitive and highly politicized arena. These include questions of positionality, access, and (self-)censorship.

The discussant will be Andrea Střelcová (Predoctoral Fellow).

About This Series

The LMRG Research Workshop is a venue for members of the Lise Meitner Research Group, "China in the Global System of Science," to share work in progress on an ongoing basis. It is an opportunity to raise questions, discuss methodological challenges, or get feedback on preliminary conclusions. We aim to create a supportive atmosphere that combines rigorous criticism with genuine curiosity.
