Soils, Stars, and Statecraft: Cosmological Conceptions of Agriculture in China and Europe, ca. 1600-1789

Soils, Stars, and Statecraft: Cosmological Conceptions of Agriculture in China and Europe, ca. 1600-1789

The paper argues that beyond the concrete adoption of "Chinese-style" agricultural practices, the Physiocrats sought to sell a more profound version of Confucian moral meteorology and political cosmology to the French government in the eighteenth century. It looks at how moments of political and climatic crisis encouraged historical actors to turn to the Other for solutions.
