The Safavid Multi-Text-Manuscript 1984.463 (Harvard University, Sackler Museum)—its Content and Context

The purpose of this workshop is to explore the main intellectual, artistic, material, and political layers of the manuscript, which is a copy of a jung produced for Shah 'Abbas II on command of his Grand vizier Khalife Soltan. This copy was made for Shah Sulayman on command of his Grand vizier 'Ali Khan Zanganeh. It is in many respects a remarkable and precious product of Safavid intellectual, political, and artistic activities in Isfahan during the second half of the seventeenth century. Hence, art historians, curators, legal and political historians, scholars of literature and historians of science and philosophy will combine their different perspectives and expertise analyzing and discussing at the workshop the various aspects of the manuscript with the goal to determine its functions and intended audiences.
