The Formalization of Historical Reasoning

This is a lecture from Colloquium Series Department 1.

Methods and precepts typical of network theory and complex systems theory have long been applied in the field of computational history. Based on the results achieved, the presentation aims to discuss how this methodological transformation can be used to arrive at a complete formalization of historical reasoning. In particular, the presentation focuses on ways to test historical hypotheses by means of multi-layer network analysis and concludes by discussing the possibility of quantifying historical temporality. The presentation is based on the project The Sphere. Knowledge System Evolution and the Shared Scientific Identity of Europe.
