IT Architect (Dept. III)

The Max Planck Institute for the History of Science (MPIWG), Berlin (Dept. III, Artefacts, Action, Knowledge, Director: Prof. Dagmar Schäfer), seeks an outstanding professional for the position of

IT Architect (full time, up to TVöD E14). The position will be for two years.

Starting date: as soon as possible, but no later than June 1, 2017

 

The successful candidate will work as the IT Architect for a digital infrastructure project with East Asian language sources that will allow academic work on variously copyrighted, free and protected digitized historical sources (especially the searchable full texts) and their integration into one working environment. This project is an international collaboration between public research institutions in Europe, Asia, and the US and involves historians, librarians, and IT technicians.

 

We are looking for an IT specialist with strong skills and rich experience in designing loosely coupled software architecture with components that run in different locations and communicate through encrypted APIs. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing and prototyping the digital infrastructure with IT specialists from partnered institutions. The working environment will include third party tools for tagging, text analyses, and text mining, visualization, mapping, etc.

 

Skills and requirement:

  • Knowledge and experience in loosely coupled software architecture design that involves APIs, secure data transfer, and authentication
  • Familiar with existing system architectures of large cross-institutional / international projects for hosting research data and for providing analytical tools (e.g., DARIAH, CLARIN, Voyant, TextGrid)
  • Familiar with open standards and their implementations
  • Strong skills in designing, prototyping, and implementing full software package
  • Strong skills in compiling and maintaining technical documentations and creating charts, such as system architecture and workflow charts
  • Good communication skills with both developers and non-developers
  • Capable of working independently and proactively
  • Proficiency in English writing and speaking

 

 

Additional qualifications (optional):

  • Experience in digital humanities or humanities-tailored projects
  • Experience of working in institutional / international collaboration project in Europe or the US
  • Reading and speaking of German
  • Reading and speaking of East Asian languages
