Elena Canadelli studied Philosophy at Milan University, obtaining her PhD in History of Science in 2009 at the University of Pisa with a dissertation on the nineteenth-century Italian evolutionist, Tito Vignoli. She has been a Postdoctoral Fellow at Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena, at the University of Milan-Bicocca, and at the University of Padua. She is currently Associate Professor of History of Science at the University of Padua, where she is also Scientific Director of the Botanical Museum. Her research focuses on visual studies in science, science museum studies, and cultures of collecting natural history objects in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. One of her latest publications (together with M. Beretta, L. Ronzon) is the volume Behind the Exhibit: Displaying Science and Technology at World’s Fairs and Museums in the Twentieth Century (Washington, DC: The Smithsonian Scholarly Press, 2019), freely available at https://opensi.si.edu/index.php/smithsonian/catalog/book/203. She has been President of the Italian Society for the History of Science and Editor-in-Chief at Nuncius. Journal of the Material and Visual History of Science since 2021. Elena’s current research project deals with the history of the botanical collections in Padua and the role of digitization in mobilizing the natural history objects, in connection with her Department’s project “Mobility & Humanities” and the new digitization infrastructure of the Italian National Biodiversity Future Center. At the MPIWG she collaborates with the Animal Mobilities Working Group, Department III.
