"The characteristics of Russian geography made possible the development of a distinct intellectual tradition in the natural sciences, which is characterised by unique conceptions of space, time and boundaries. This uniqueness is probably at the base of Russia’s impressive career in the Earth sciences, which reached its peak between the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century."
