Academic freedom as we know it today developed in the nineteenth century in Germany. At that time not only could professors decide upon their topics independently, but students had great freedom compared to the present day. In this article for MaxPlanckForschung, Director Emerita Lorraine Daston explores the development of and limits to academic freedom.
