The Max Planck Institute for the History of Science, Berlin, Lise Meitner Research Group “China in the Global System of Science” (led by Dr. Anna Lisa Ahlers), seeks
1 Predoctoral Fellow
Earliest starting date: 01 May 2020 for three years with the option of extension, with a 65% employment contract. Remuneration is based on the TVöD-Bund pay scales (E13, 65%).
Outstanding graduates holding a Master degree, or equivalent, in sinology/Chinese studies, sociology, political science, history of science, anthropology, or other relevant fields are invited to apply. Degree should be in hand by commencement of employment. Chinese language proficiency is required; fieldwork experience is an advantage.
As part of their application, candidates should submit a research prospectus in which they outline their planned contribution to one of the following core areas of the research group (please also see the project’s homepage):
A. Chinese perspectives on the status of science in society, esp. the autonomy of science vs. its political steering; political regime and non-political social structures as environmental factors for science
B. Structures, actors, dimensions, and norms of China’s contemporary science policy
C. Steering vs. agency of scientific communities, networks and individuals in China and in international collaboration
D. Interactions of scientific standards and practices with societal values and ethical principles in China and beyond
