The Max Planck Institute for the History of Science, Berlin, Lise Meitner Research Group “China in the Global System of Science” (led by Dr. Anna Lisa Ahlers), seeks
1 Postdoctoral Fellow
Earliest starting date: 01 May 2020, with employment contract for three years with the option of extension, working in a research area in close conjunction with the agenda of the research group. Remuneration is based on the TVöD-Bund pay scales (E13/E14, 100%).
Outstanding junior scholars holding a PhD, or equivalent, in sinology/Chinese studies, sociology, political science, history of science, anthropology, STS, scientometrics, or other relevant fields are invited to apply. Degree should be in hand by commencement of employment. Fieldwork experience and Chinese language proficiency are required qualifications.
As part of their application, candidates should submit a research prospectus in which they outline their planned contribution to one or more of the following core areas of the research group:
A. Chinese perspectives on the status of science in society, esp. the autonomy of science vs. its political steering; political regime and non-political social structures as environmental factors for science
B. Structures, actors, dimensions, and norms of China’s contemporary science policy
C. Steering vs. agency of scientific communities, networks and individuals in China and in international collaboration
D. Interactions of scientific standards and practices with societal values and ethical principles in China and beyond
