The Max Planck Institute for the History of Science (MPIWG)
is seeking an IT Researcher (f/m/d)
initially limited until 28.02.2028
as soon as possible.
One of the more than 80 institutes of the Max Planck Society, the MPIWG is among the world’s leading centers for research into the history of science. It offers outstanding working conditions for its scholars and sustainably promotes the use of digital methodologies in the humanities. The MPIWG intends to further enhance its support for projects in the history of science.
The Institute is keen to conduct cutting-edge digital scholarship, while making use of established standards for data representation and exchange (Linked Data, CIDOC-CRM, IIIF, etc.). Projects are expected to build on and contribute to a common digital research infrastructure, producing sustainable digital research outputs that can be reused and shared openly.
- As a member of Research IT, provide technical advice and support to research projects at the institute with the main focus on the research projects of department I and jointly with the other members of the research IT on the needs of the research groups.
- Contribute to the research data management of projects, including integrating projects into central research digital infrastructure; selecting and implementing a pioneering portfolio of technical solutions
- Establishing standards and best practises for software-supported research across the MPIWG
- Designing and developing interactive research environments for digital humanities
- Publicising innovative technologies for research projects in the history of science and the consequences of applying DH method in this field
- A Master’s or PhD level degree, in computer science, information science, digital humanities, history of science, or a related discipline with proven professional experience in applying digital methods to research in the history of science.
- Strong skills and experience in generic digital methods for historical research, with at least 2 of the following fields proven by publications (peer-reviewed or book series with high reputation) or involvement in high-profile digital humanities projects:
- Historical methods Interest in the history of science and computational history, familiarity with the historical approaches at the institute, i.e. historical epistemology e.g., represented by socio-epistemic systems or the role of innovation and spread of innovation
- General Data analysis Analysing existing data sets, data science, e.g. bibliometric studies, text and data mining, network analysis
- Software development Overview of and familiarity with the software libraries, frameworks, and tools for digital humanities currently on the market, knowledge of Python, Python notebooks, and Django to oversee the programmers in the project, and insights into the principles of UX and API design.
- Data modelling Data modelling, linked data, CIDOC CR
At least basic knowledge is desired in 1 of these other specialised fields:
- Historical network analysis network analysis (social network analysis and historical network analyses, hypergraphs, complex systems
- GIS and geospatial data visualisation familiarity with geo-spatial visualisation technologies particular dynamics (e.g. spreads of innovation)
- Machine Learning Machine learning methods applied to the analysis of text, images, or historical research
- Excellent organizational skills, including proven experience in project management, especially applying modern, agile approaches
- Resourceful, motivated, and results-oriented
- Experience in leading teams and facilitating their cooperative coordination
- Excellent communication skills in English.
What we offer:
The salary is based on the German public service salary scale TVöD Bund, up to level E14. The appointment is initially fixed term (until 28.02.2028).
