Some Questions about the New DSM-5-TR Diagnosis of Prolonged Grief Disorder

Cover of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders

Miriam Solomon will look at the new (2022) DSM-5-TR category of Prolonged Grief Disorder (PGD) and consider both the scientific evidence for it and its potential clinical utility. She will argue that the evidence for PGD is modest even by DSM standards, and that the clinical utility of PGD is quite limited. The scientific evidence for PGD may or may not improve. The clinical utility of PGD can improve in practice or in future DSM revisions. There is much to learn about how we conceptualize psychiatric disorders from looking at this case.
