The Max Planck Society in China: From Cold War Diplomacy to Globalized Scientific Cooperation (1974–2014)

Within the framework of its wide-ranging international scientific cooperations, the MPS's relations with China took on a special status. Instead of keeping the greatest possible distance from Bonn's foreign policy, as the Society usually tried to do, it willingly assumed the role of a diplomatic door-opener for West German business and of a development aid provider for scientific research in China in 1973/74. Nevertheless, in the following decades the MPS succeeded in increasingly asserting its scientific interests. Above all, the Society made itself fit for the global race on talent in the 21st century by cooperating with the rapidly developing Chinese science system - despite all political reservations.

About This Series

The LMRG Colloquium is a venue for members and guests of the Lise Meitner Research Group, "China in the Global System of Science," to share work in progress on an ongoing basis. It is an opportunity to raise questions, discuss methodological challenges, or get feedback on preliminary conclusions. We aim to create a supportive atmosphere that combines rigorous criticism with genuine curiosity.
