Laboratory for Oral History and Experimental Media Series: The Era of the Witness

In this meeting, we will collectively view excerpts from an oral history interview recorded on VHS with Holocaust survivor Hela Olszynko (Niedviecki) in Montreal, on 9 September, 1998. We will then discuss the recording in relation to a body of scholarship that has critiqued the “Hollywoodization” of memory while advocating for an approach to life history interviewing that treats the survivors of mass violence as whole people.

Laboratory for Oral History and Experimental Media Spring 2024 series.
This new series of monthly institute-wide meetings begins a collective exploration of the theory and practice of oral history and ethnography as powerful, multimodal research methods for recovering perspectives and experiences that are often absent from traditional archives. Together, we will engage with diverse forms of research and communication across a range of media and visit local sites of interest.
