Historical Astronomy of China: A Practical Workshop

In this workshop, Jeffrey Kotyk will introduce the fundamental concepts and ideas of classical Chinese astronomy, including the twenty-eight lunar lodges (二十八宿), the ecliptic (黃道), the celestial equator (赤道), and the planets (七星). He will demonstrate the use of Stellarium, a software tool for exploring the night sky at any point in history from any location on Earth.

Participants will receive handouts to help them better understand the concepts of basic Chinese astronomy. Some aspects of astrology will also be covered, with images, illustrations, and tables provided to make the material more accessible.

Anyone at the Institute who interested in astronomy, even without prior knowledge of Chinese, is welcome to join.
