Charles S. Peirce on the "Mutual Aid" between History of Science and Philosophy

The philosopher and logician Charles S. Peirce (1839-1914) is most known today for the role he played in the genesis of pragmatist philosophy, as well as for his path-breaking work in semiotics. However, he also was a committed historian, and in particular a historian of science. In this talk, I will give an overview of Peirce’s most significant historical inquiries, and I will describe in which sense Peirce thought that historical knowledge is indispensable for sound philosophical reflection.

About This Series

The seminar series of the Research Group “Historical Epistemology of the Final Theory Program” runs once a month, usually on a Monday at 14:30 in the seminar room of the Villa (Harnackstraße 5). The talks deal primarily with the history, philosophy, and foundations of modern (post-WWII) physics or with wider epistemological questions related to the work of the group. There are no pre-circulated papers.
