Sollte das Anthropozän wirklich ein neues Erdzeitalter darstellen, dann müssten sich seine Spuren überall finden lassen. Tatsächlich suchen Geologen in Sedimentschichten von Seen, Eisbohrkernen oder Korallen nach stratigraphischen Nachweisen, während Erdsystemwissenschaftler integrierte Datensätze über planetare Stoff- und Energiekreisläufe anhäufen, um in ihnen den „menschlichen Fingerabdruck“ auszumachen. Solch ein weltumfassender Untersuchungsmaßstab ist der Schlüssel für das Verständnis eines neuen erdgeschichtlichen Zeitabschnitts und steht damit im Unterschied zu dem althergebrachten Fokus auf eine örtlich begrenzte Verschlechterung von Umweltbedingungen. Um jedoch konkret zu verstehen, wie menschliche Eingriffe einen solchen großskaligen Wandel ausgelöst haben, muss die globale Beobachtungsperspektive mit feldorientierten Methoden des „Ground Truth“ kombiniert und geowissenschaftliche Evidenz mit historischen, geographischen und sozioökonomischen Analysen lokaler Räume verknüpft werden.
