Melissa Charenko is a PhD candidate in the History of Science at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Her dissertation, “Science as Prophecy: Paleo Perspectives on Environmental Change,” explores how ecologists used the deep past to make predictions about the well-being of living beings—humans and non-humans alike—in an era of environmental degradation. This work has been supported by the Mellon Foundation, the Social Science and Humanities Research Council of Canada, and the Consortium for the History of Science, Technology, and Medicine.
Melissa has also taught courses in Science and Technology Studies at Colby College, which used a cooperative board game to introduce students to concepts in biology and society. Her innovative teaching has been recognized with an Honored Instructor Award from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
