Advanced Computational Methods for Humanities and Social Sciences Research: Graph Databases, Deep Learning and AI

Recent advances in computational methods have opened new and exciting avenues for research in nearly every academic field and discipline. This talk provides a broad overview of how technology experts in the University of Chicago's Forum for Digital Culture (digitalculture.uchicago.edu) have implemented new integrated systems for humanities scholars to take advantage of these methods, including deep learning frameworks ("A.I."), graph databases and platforms for geospatial analysis and 3D modeling. The new systems the Forum provides have empowered scholars to make rapid advances in research in philology, history and archaeology, and in partnership with the University of Chicago Library and University of Chicago Press, to begin developing new peer-reviewed approaches to publishing "born digital" resources like databases and code repositories.

About This Series

Brown Bag Lunch is a meeting of researchers at the MPIWG who use or want to learn more about digital research methods, broadly encompassed by the term Digital Humanities. The events are also open to external participants with an interest in digital humanities. In the meetings, researchers can discuss tools, share ideas and experiences (good and bad), and learn from each other. Each session explores a new topic; workshops are usually interactive, and we often invite external speakers.
