Epidemics in Context: Cholera and Plague in North Africa (1798–1919)

Thumbnail No 58 Plague, cholera, and fevers have historically disrupted the commercial and geopolitical fabrics of port cities. In her project, Postdoctoral Fellow Edna Bonhomme examines how Alexandria, Tripoli, and Tunis managed infectious diseases between 1798 and 1919. Her research shows how sickness has long formed part of a process of globalizing medical surveillance, biomedicine, and public health policies—and how these in turn have affected the severity and span of disease.
