He earned his doctorate in Chinese History from the University of Tokyo in 2002. His dissertation discussed the world order of Han Dynasty through its official seal system. He started his academic career at the University of Teacher Education Fukuoka in 2002, afterwards taught at Japan Women’s University. Since 2008 he has been working at Chuo University. He worked as a visiting professor at Tsinghua University for a year in 2018.
In 2001 he was awarded the 20th Toho Gakkai Award by the Institute of Eastern Culture, Japan. He is Overseas Honorary Director of the Historical Association of Wei-Jin and Southern and Northern Dynasty of China, and a member of the editorial committee of the Historical Society of Japan.
