Karin Bijsterveld is a historian and Professor of Science, Technology, and Modern Culture at Maastricht University, the Netherlands. Her research focuses on themes at the intersection of Science & Technology Studies and Sound Studies, such as the history of noise; the relations between technology and music; the use of sound technologies in museums; and listening in the sciences. For this last theme, she was awarded an Innovational Research Incentive Scheme (Vici) grant from the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research NWO (2010–2015), which resulted in the open access monograph Sonic Skills (Palgrave, 2019). She is a former academic director of the Netherlands Graduate Research School of Science, Technology, and Modern Culture (WTMC) and a founding member of the European Sound Studies Association (ESSA). She is research program leader of the Maastricht University Science, Technology and Society Studies program (MUSTS) and a member of the editorial advisory board for the journal Sound Studies, the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Royal Holland Society of Sciences and Humanities, and the Dutch Council for the Humanities. Karin Bijsterveld’s outreach activities include a soundscapes simulation for the Amsterdam Museum (2013), the Sonic Science Virtual Exhibition (2015), and a Dutch-language audiobook on the history of sound (2019).
