Karin Bijsterveld is a historian and Professor of Science, Technology, and Modern Culture at Maastricht University, the Netherlands. Her research focuses on themes at the crossroads of Science & Technology Studies and Sound Studies, such as the history of noise; the relations between technology and music; the use of sound technologies in museums; and listening in the sciences. For this last theme, she was awarded an Innovational Research Incentive Scheme (Vici) grant from the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research NWO (2010–2015). She is a former Academic Director of the Netherlands Graduate Research School of Science, Technology, and Modern Culture (WTMC), coordinator of the Sound Studies specialization in the MA Media Culture, founding member of the European Sound Studies Association, and a member of the editorial advisory board for the journal Sound Studies. Karin Bijsterveld’s outreach activities include a soundscapes simulation for the Amsterdam Museum (2013) and the Sonic Science Festival (2015). In the spring of 2017, she will be a fellow at the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study (NIAS) in Amsterdam.
