Giovanni Paoloni, full professor at “Sapienza” – Università di Roma, teaches Archival Theory (Archivistica generale), and History and Policies of Science and Research (Storia e politiche della scienza e della ricerca). A former director of Scuola di specializzazione in beni archivistici e librari (2014–2020), and former coordinator of the PhD Program Scienze documentarie, linguistiche e letterarie (2018–20), Giovanni began his career in the Italian national archives (1979–1997). His main current research interests are focused on the history of Italian academies, the socio-economic function of cultural infrastructures, the interaction of archival and library disciplines with sciences, the survey of Italian scientific heritage, as well as the descriptive integration of archival, library, and museum heritage. He is currently Academic Visitor of Linacre College (Oxford University), PI of the webportal Archive dell Scienza, a member of the Comité International d’Histoire de l’Électricité et de l’Énergie (Fondation EdF), corresponding member of the Accademia delle Scienze dell’Istituto di Bologna, member of the committee for the history of the academy at Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei.


He co-edited Per una storia del Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (with Raffaella Simili, 2001), and co-authored L’Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare. Storia di una comunità di ricerca (with Giovanni Battimelli and Michelangelo De Maria, 2001), Vito Volterra (with Angelo Guerraggio, 2008, translated into German 2010, and English 2012).

He is currently working in Department I on the completion of a book on the history of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei from 1870 to 2000.
