Zhihui Chen

Zhihui Chen obtained his PhD from Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 2014 with a dissertation on the history of astronomy and mathematics in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century China. He subsequently conducted postdoctoral research under the SAW (Mathematical Sciences in the Ancient World) ERC project at the Laboratoire SPHERE, CNRS—Université Paris 7. He is currently an associate professor at Inner Mongolia Normal University. During his time as a Senior Research Fellow in the Max Planck Partner Group Daily Practices of Cosmological Knowledge in Late Imperial China (1368–1911), he focused on the mid-Ming restoration of the Duke of Zhou’s Gnomon Shadow-Measuring Tablet and the “Center of the Earth” concept relating to shadow measuring. His recent book, Rong “Xi“ ji “jue“ : Qian Jia tiansuan zhuanmen zhi xue lungao 融“西”继“绝”: 乾嘉天算专门之学论稿 (Integrating the West and reviving the lost: A study of astro-mathematical specialty during the Qian-Jia era), has been published twice by Shanghai Guji Chubanshe—in January 2022 and in May 2025 (revised edition).
