Paul Iversen

Senior Research Fellow

Paul Iversen is an associate professor of Classics at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. He earned a BA in Classics from Michigan State University and his MA and PhD in Classics from The Ohio State University. His research interests and publications are in the areas of Greek and Latin epigraphy and Hellenistic culture and society, and in particular the epigraphy and history of Ancient Corinth. He currently serves as the epigraphist for the Lechaion Harbor and Land Settlement archaeological project. In collaboration with Sebastian Prignitz and Jamie Curbera, he is also working on corpus of all the pre-Christian Greek Inscriptions of the Corinthia for the Inscriptiones Graecae project. It was while working on these that he heard that the entire calendar of Ancient Corinth—which is otherwise very poorly attested—may have been found on the Antikythera Mechanism. So began his interest in the study of this remarkable device. His current research is focused on a complete re-edition and commentary of all the inscriptions found on the Mechanism. For this work, he was awarded a National Endowment for the Humanities Grant, which involved creating the first ever Microsoft HoloLens image of the Antikythera Mechanism. Other previous support has come from the Einstein Centre Chronoi (Berlin), and also from the Baker-Nord Institute at Case Western Reserve University. At the MPIWG he is a member of the Working Group “Heavens in Your Hand: Artifacts and Astral Practices in Eurasia and North Africa (4000 BCE–1700 CE)” in Department AAK.
