For the Fortunate and Fearful Years: The Structure and Content of Persian Nativity Books

Horoscopic chart for the birth of the son of a Timurid vizier, dated 4 June 1434, Isfahan.

For centuries, astronomy and astrology were inseparable, influencing everything from daily life to royal politics. Nativity books—treatises containing every step of casting a birth horoscope—were where mathematical astronomy met fate. They open a window onto how astrologers used the stars to explore the character, destiny, and well-being of their clients.

Join us as we unlock the world of Persian nativity books, many created for the Timurid royal family. Together, we will step into the astrologers’ workshop, see how they practiced their craft, and discover what these texts reveal about courtly culture and the intellectual life of the Persianate world.
