Jongtae Lim

Jongtae Lim received his PhD in 2003 at Seoul National University, with a dissertation examining the literati’s understanding of the Jesuits’ geographical knowledge in early modern China and Korea. Since 2006, he has been teaching the history of East Asian science at the Program in History and Philosophy of Science, Seoul National University. He currently serves as Editor-in-Chief of the Korean Journal for the History of Science.

Jongtae Lim has conducted research on topics concerning scientific exchanges in early modern East Asia. His current project examines scientific exchanges occasioned by the Korean tributary missions to Qing China. Recent publications concerning the project includes: “Journeys of the Modest Astronomers: Korean Astronomers’ Missions to Beijing in the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries,” Extrême-Orient Extrême-Occident 36 (2014), 81-108; “The Tributary Relations between the Chosŏn and Ch’ing Courts to 1800,” in W.J. Peterson (ed.), The Cambridge History of China, Vol. 9, Part II (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2016), 146–196.
