Florence Hsia is Professor of History of Science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She holds a PhD in History from the University of Chicago (1999) and an AB in East Asian Studies from Princeton University (1990). Her Sojourners in a Strange Land: Jesuits and Their Scientific Missions in Late Imperial China (Chicago, 2009) analyzed the scientific personae and genres deployed by members of the Society of Jesus at work in the Chinese missions. Her current research project concerns sinographical expertise in early modern Europe and its relation to the constitution of sinology as a field of knowledge. As a member of the “Archives of the Sciences” Working Group in Department II, she contributed “Astronomy After the Deluge” to Science in the Archives: Pasts, Presents, Futures, edited by Lorraine Daston (Chicago, 2017).
