Doris Kaufmann

Doris Kaufmann joined the Research Program on the History of the Max Planck Society (GMPG) in 2017. She is Professor Emeritus of the University of Bremen. She studied history and political science at the University of Münster, the Freie Universität Berlin, and the Technical University of Berlin. Since 1981 she has worked as a lecturer in women’s history, Research Associate, Visiting Professor and Researcher at various Institutions in Germany and the USA, including the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. Between 1998 and 2000 she worked as a Project Leader on the Research Program "History of the Kaiser Wilhelm Society in National Socialism" at the Max Planck Society. Since 2000, Kaufmann has taught at the University of Bremen as a Professor for the history of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Doris’ research interests include cultural and scientific history, in particular the history of natural sciences and psychiatry in national socialism, the history of the human sciences since the eighteenth century, the cultural and social history of Devianz and deviation in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. She also belongs to the Advisory Board of the journal Feministische Studien. Doris’ GMPG project looks at the debate on primitivism in Germany, France, and the United States in the early twentieth century.
