Cultural Traditions of Technical Knowledge

Dagmar Schäfer, Martina Siebert, Martin Hofmann

Chinese elite writings provide evidence of concepts of technology—they reflect upon changes and these reflections in turn influence the culture of knowledge. This defines the intellectual setting for technical invention and innovation in premodern China. This project, consisting of three individual projects, sought to explore this through a philological archeology of master craftsmen; historicized innovation and knowledge tradition and its encounter with the new; and Chinese building manuals and traditions of architectural technology.
