Yulia Kiselyova is an associate professor at the Department of Historiography, Source Studies, and Archaeology of V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University. She specializes in Ukrainian historiography and has published a book titled Formation and Development of Historiographical Studies at Imperial Kharkiv University (Kharkiv, 2014).
She is particularly interested in the evolution of the professional ethos of Ukrainian historians in the early Soviet era, focusing on the fracturing and reshaping of ethical principles in response to external events.
From 2018 to 2021, as part of the project “Practices of the Self-Representation of Multinational Cities in the Industrial and Post-Industrial Era,” supported by the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies (University of Alberta), Kiselyova studied Kharkiv’s monumental sites of memory, reconstructing the “pantheon” of local heroes and analyzing the media coverage of memorial initiatives in Kharkiv during the era of Ukrainian independence.
One of her recent projects is devoted to methodological developments in Ukrainian historiography during the era of Ukrainian independence. She built and analyzed a relational database of historiographical dissertation abstracts (avtoreferaty), tracing changes in the thematic range and methodological foundations of historiographical research and outlining the evolving shapes of research communities.
Finally, in collaboration with Victoriia Ivashchenko, Yulia Kiselyova has developed the oral history project “Moving West: Ukrainian Academics in Conditions of Forced Migration” (2014–2022) supported by Max Planck Institute for the History of Science. The project aims to explore strategies of survival and career-building in extreme circumstances as well as forms of solidarity and cooperation within the academic community.
