Tanvi Solanki

Visiting Postdoctoral Fellow (Mai 2017-Aug 2017)

PhD, Postdoctoral Associate, Cornell University

I received my PhD in 2016 from the German Department at Princeton University and my BA Comparative Literature and Germanic Studies from the University of Chicago. I am currently a Stanford H. Taylor Postdoctoral Associate in the College of Arts and Sciences at Cornell University, an interdisciplinary position based in the Department of German Studies. My current research project deals with eighteenth-century concepts of tone, rhythm, and prosody and how they shaped formative ideas of culture in the fields of anthropology, theology, philology, and literary criticism.

At the MPIWG I am Visiting Postdoctoral Fellow in the research group “Epistemes of Modern Acoustics” from May–August 2017. I am concurrently affiliated with the thematic network “Literature—Knowledge—Media” at the Humboldt University, Berlin. In 2012–2013 I was a DAAD research scholar affiliated with the international network “Knowledge of Literature” at the Humboldt University. At Cornell, I am leading a digital humanities project on text mining and statistical analysis of “oral” and literate epics and their critical apparatuses. In 2016–2017, through an Andrew W. Mellon Brett de Bary Fellowship, I am organizing an interdisciplinary writing group on “Cultural Acoustics.”

My teaching and research specializations are situated at the intersection of eighteenth–nineteenth-century European literature and the theories and practices of media, culture, and translation including sound studies, historical prosody and digital humanities. At Cornell, I have taught courses such as “The Sound of Literature” and “Technologies of Verse.”
