Shane Butler

Shane Butler is Nancy H. and Robert E. Hall Professor in the Humanities and Professor and Chair of Classics at Johns Hopkins University. He received his PhD from Columbia University in 2000 and went on to teach at the University of Pennsylvania, at UCLA, and at the University of Bristol in the UK, before moving to Johns Hopkins in 2015. He is the author, editor, or co-editor of six books, including three monographs: The Hand of Cicero (2002), The Matter of the Page: Essays in Search of Ancient and Medieval Authors (2011), and The Ancient Phonograph (2015). His work on post-classical engagement with antiquity includes a recent edited volume, Deep Classics: Rethinking Classical Reception (2016). He is also the ongoing editor and translator of the Latin Letters of Angelo Poliziano for the I Tatti Renaissance Library. A new book, Sound and the Ancient Senses, co-edited with Sarah Nooter, will appear later this year; Synaesthesia and the Ancient Senses, co-edited with Alex Purves, appeared in 2013. He currently is working on a monograph titled On the Surface: John Addington Symonds Across Space and Time, which attempts a phenomenological revision of the history of homosexuality, with particular emphasis on the sense of touch.
