Jeffrey Kotyk

Visiting Postdoctoral Fellow (Jun 2019-Jul 2019)

Jeffrey Kotyk (PhD, Leiden University, 2017) is a Robert H.N. Ho Family Foundation Postdoctoral Fellow in Buddhist Studies at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. His research deals with the introduction and development of horoscopy in East Asia, particularly in relation to religious traditions, such as Buddhism and Daoism. He has also published on astrological iconography in medieval China and Japan.

Prior to completing his PhD in the Netherlands, he spent several years studying Buddhism in Japan, Taiwan, and India. He has held awards from the Japanese Ministry of Education, Bukkyō Dendō Kyōkai, the Robert H.N. Ho Family Foundation, and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada.

Jeffrey’s recent publications include “Astrological Determinism in Indian Buddhism” in Journal of the International Association of Buddhist Studies (2018) and “The Sinicization of Indo-Iranian Astrology in Medieval China” in Sino-Platonic Papers.
