José Beltran

Visiting Predoctoral Fellow (Jan 2017-Mar 2017)

MA, Doctoral Student, European University Institute

José Beltran is a PhD candidate at the Department of History and Civilization at the EUI, where he is completing a dissertation on the role played by visual representation in transatlantic enterprises of natural history in late seventeenth- and early eighteenth-century France. Provisionally entitled “Nature in Draft: Images and Overseas Natural History in the Work of Charles Plumier (1646–1704),” the thesis focuses on the visual materials produced by the traveling friar and naturalist Charles Plumier on his journeys to the French West Indies. His general research interests revolve around three topics: graphic and textual practices in the making of natural knowledge, the emergence of natural history as a distinct discipline, and the role that these played in the European overseas projects during the early modern period.

José studied history at the Universities of Alicante and Aix-Marseille, and history of science at the Centre Koyré of the EHESS in Paris. He has been a visiting student at HPS, Cambridge, and worked for short-term periods at the CSIC in Madrid and Columbia University in New York City. His research has been supported by the Institut national d’histoire de l’art in Paris, the European University Institute in Florence, and the Spanish Ministry of Education.
