Carolyn Taratko is a PhD candidate at Vanderbilt University (USA) spending 2016–2017 in Berlin as a Visiting Scholar. Her work combines approaches from the history of science with social history to trace understandings of nutrition, self-sufficiency, and land use. Her current research explores understanding of hunger and malnourishment in Germany and abroad in the early twentieth-century. Her dissertation, tentatively titled "Feeding Germany: Nutrition and the German Countryside, 1871–1923,” explores the development of nutritional science and agricultural expertise. Her research has been supported by the Fulbright Commission, the DAAD, and the Council for European Studies
