Luigi Rogora

Luigi is a Tibetologist specializing in the intellectual history of astral sciences and geography in Tibet. His central research investigates the complex interplay between scientific knowledge and religious Buddhist authority, particularly as it evolved across different lineages of Tibetan Buddhism.

A philologist by training, Luigi critically examines textual sources and their commentarial traditions. His current research at the MPIWG, affiliated with the Max Planck Research Group "Astral Sciences in Trans-Regional Asia" (ASTRA), focuses on the early history of Tibetan astronomy of Indian origin (skar rtsis). He specifically analyzes how this tradition is reflected in Tibetan commentaries on the foundational text, the Kālacakratantra (Dus kyi 'khor lo'i rgyud).

Luigi completed his PhD in Asian Studies in 2025 at Naples University "L’Orientale," with a dissertation on the development of geographical thought in Tibetan literature. Prior to this, he earned his MA in Asian Studies from the same institution and a BA in Classics from Milan University "La Statale."

Beyond his core research, Luigi has interests in the history of Tibetan poetry and has recently begun studying Classical Newar to explore the tradition of courtly drama within the Malla court of Nepal. He is also a dedicated member of the academic community, serving on the board of the Italian Association of Tibetan, Himalayan and Mongolian Studies (AISTHiM).
