Yingpin Zhang

Yingpin Zhang studied Ming history at Nankai University, obtaining her PhD in 2003 with a dissertation entitled A Study of the Local Gazetteers of Southern Zhili Province in the Ming Period. Since 2008 she has been a Research Fellow in the Office of China Local Gazetteer Steering Group. Since 2014 she has been Professor & Doctorial Tutor in the Graduate School of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. 

Yingpin’s research focuses on Ming history and Chinese local gazetteers. Her current project is entitled “Structural Analysis and Style Observation of Chinese Local Gazetteers." She will use the gazetteer maps collected by Yenching Library of Harvard University, emphasizing specifically the gazetteer maps as a follow-up to the earlier digitalization project. In addition to her academic research, Yingpin’s book A Study of the Local Gazetteers of Southern Zhili Province in the Ming Period (Social Sciences Academic Press, 2005) won the Guo Moruo Chinese History Award In 2007. In 2016, she applied for funding from the National Social Science Fund for her research on the gazetteer maps. She has been a member of the council of Chinese Society on Ming Dynasty History since 1996 and deputy secretary-general of the Chinese Local Gazetteers Society since 2009.
