Profile

Antonio Becchi is co-founder of the Edoardo Benvenuto Association for the History of Structural Mechanics (1999) and of the Bibliotheca Mechanico-Architectonica (2007). Since 2010 he is a member of the editorial board of the Max Planck Research Library for the History and Development of Knowledge and co-director of the book series Between Mechanics and Architecture (Edizioni di Storia e Letteratura, Rome). Since 2012 he has been a correspondent member of the International Academy of the History of Science and a member of the Construction History Society Trustees and Management Committee. He has been a member of the “Conseil d’administration” of the Association Francophone d’Histoire de la Construction since 2014.

Antonio Becchi's research interests include the history of mechanics, of construction, and of the mathematical disciplines between mechanics and architecture. He is currently conducting research on the vitruvian tradition and on the topic Old Mechanics in New Bodies: Equilibrium, Strength, Stability between Mechanical Principles and Architectural Theories (16th-20th c.). Between 2011 and 2016 he was a member of the Collaborative Research Centre 644 (Humboldt University, Berlin). He is currently working on the project The Finale of Antiquity: The Analytic Turn of Mechanics between Traditional Models of Thought and Claims of Autonomy and his research is focusing on the connections between practical and theoretical knowledge in architecture and engineering from the sixteenth to the twentieth century.
