Rohan Deb Roy

I am completing my first book manuscript, which explores the cultural and political history of the co-production of knowledge about the remedy quinine and its disease malaria in British India.  Engaging with new imperial histories, constructivism in the histories of medicine, and questions about materiality of objects within and beyond science studies, it examines the entanglements of politics about plants, disease categories, events, drugs, insects and empire in South Asia and the wider colonial world in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.  Besides, I am conducting research on a newer project, which explores metaphors and materials associated with the category "insects" in South Asian history between the late-eighteenth and mid-twentieth centuries.

I am putting together a co-edited (with Sujit Sivasundaram) special issue on "Non-human Empires" and a co-edited volume (with Guy Attewell) titled "Locating the Medical in South Asian Histories." I am the book reviews editor of the Routledge journal "South Asian Histories and Culture."
