Profile

Jean-Marc Besse is senior researcher at the National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS). He was trained in philosophy (agrégation) and history (Ph. D.) at the university of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne. He is the director of the EHGO/UMR Géographie-cités team (CNRS/Paris I/Paris VII).
The main orientation of his research is an epistemological and historical investigation of modern and contemporary geography, space and landscape. Among his current projects: a study on the birth and diffusion of the atlas as a form of representation of geographical knowledge in early modern Europe, and an investigation of geography as a heuristic resource in the field of the history of science.
He is president of the “history” committee in the Comité Français de Cartographie.
